How Dangerous is Manic Matthew?

I know this fellow looks carefree but he is actually 'manic'. He is one of my 'Depression Go-Aways' cast of characters. I call him Manic Matthew.

'Manic' can present itself in many ways. 'Manic' is the other side of the mental disorder called 'Bipolar Disorder'. Bipolar is a form of depression which shares the same symptoms as other forms of depression but also has a flip side to the depressive side and that is 'manic'.

Here are some of the behaviors that can sometimes accompany a manic episode according to WebMD:
  • Disconnected and racing thoughts
  • Grandiose notions
  • Inappropriate elation
  • Inappropriate irritability
  • Inappropriate social behavior
  • Increased sexual desire
  • Increased talking speed and/or volume
  • Markedly increased energy
  • Poor judgment
  • Severe insomnia
'Manic Matthew' is a Depression Go-Away character that you definitely want to resist. But that is not so easy. I have experienced some of these behaviors and they can be destructive.

It isn't easy to control them but it isn't totally impossible either. Now I am only experienced with a mild form of bipolar but it is scary enough. If you are experiencing uncontrollable manic you should get yourself to the hospital right away.

If you are experiencing the kind of manic that I do and have developed the ability to recognize it when it is coming, then there are ways to deal with it. Here is what has helped me.

1. STOP doing everything including talking to people. Cancel whatever you can.

2. STOP taking any stimulants from caffeine, to chocolate to alcohol.

3. GO TO BED if you can. Veg out. Try to calm down.

4. BREATH DEEPLY.

5. WAIT for it to pass. It may pass without medical intervention. If it doesn't, GET HELP.

Manic Matthew is a dangerous companion. You definitely want him to go away!

HOW ABOUT YOU? How are you feeling today? Have you experienced 'manic'? Have you discovered something that helps you cope with it?

Don't give up! There is hope for depression.
