What do Woodpeckers and Machine Guns have in Common?

Oh you may have guessed it already. What do woodpeckers and machine guns have in common? The noise?

Fast relentless noise!

But other than that can you even compare the two?

Well, if your woodpecker is pecking on the steel eavestroughing on your house, then yes! It is as noisy as a machine gun to you in that moment! And...as fast! Boy do they go fast.

So, as you may have figured out, we have a woodpecker doing just that at our house - pecking on the steel eavestrough. And what time of day? Five o'clock in the morning! Annoying....

And what does any of this have to do with depression?

Well, in the grand scheme of things, a woodpecker is not nearly so dangerous or imposing or threatening as a machine gun. And in the grand scheme of things depression is not the biggest and worst illness you can have.

But to the person who is experiencing depression, it seems as loud, threatening and as imposing as a machine gun. There is nothing gentle or cute about it! And to you, it is the worst thing ever.

Just as it is difficult to have a good perspective about anything when you are depressed, so it is hard to have a good attitude about anything when at five o'clock in the morning a woodpecker is making sounds like a machine gun right outside your bedroom window!

WHAT ABOUT YOU? What kind of day are you having? Are you able to keep a good perspective about life when you are depressed? How are you feeling these days? Is depression worse or better for you in the spring?

Don't give up! There is hope for depression.
