Therapy: ONE SIZE does NOT fit ALL! (Part 3 of Therapy Can Be Risky Business)

One of the great things about therapy, if it is working for you, is that once a week, or once a month you know you are going to spend time with someone whose only purpose for one hour is to listen to you and focus on you. That is a luxury.

And during that time between sessions, if something comes up either in your circumstances or your symptoms, you know you will have an upcoming opportunity to discuss it with someone you trust.

The counsellors that were the most helpful for me were the ones who already knew me and my situation. My family doctor and my sister knew me the best and I trusted their judgement. I did not trust my own judgement.

However, you may be feeling quite well when you choose your therapist so maybe you can do a little research and come to your own conclusions.

Therapy is a really big deal. It COULD help you but it could also hurt you. It's a good idea to have a little background information before seeking a therapist.

Why are you going to therapy? Are you expecting your situation to change? Are YOU willing to change the way you think about your situation?

There are so many different kinds of therapy. It can be overwhelming. Your family doctor may be able to help you with this, but it would benefit you if you did a little research on your own.

You don't have to look any farther than this article "Guide to Psychiatry and Counselling". It covers everything. Try not to be overwhelmed by the list.

Now, if you hear of a good therapist in your neighbourhood, you can look them up online. Usually they will describe the type of therapy they offer.

Sometimes figuring out how to know what you want or need starts with figuring out what you don't want.

This article: "The Most Popular Kinds of Psychotherapy (and why you should try one) Explained" is my favourite. For each type of therapy it describes

1.what it is useful for,
2. the term of treatment and
3. what to expect.

So, if you do decide you need therapy, you don't want to waste your time or money or emotions on the wrong kind of therapy or the wrong therapist. Do your homework.

WHAT ABOUT YOU? How are you feeling today? Do you think you could benefit from a good therapist?

Don't give up! there is hope for depression.
