Don't Let "Fall" cause your mood to 'Fall'.
As I write this it is the late August and after a long hot summer we have had our first dull rainy weather. The days are getting shorter. The sun sets earlier and rises later and we are all very much aware of fall just ahead of us. And then winter comes after that. Mmm....not a fan of winter.
I've written about the 'change of seasons' before. You may want to do a review.
I've written about the' lack of light' and how it affects mood.
All that to say:
Heads up everyone!
Change of seasons can be tough
on anyone
challenged with any kind of
mood disorder.
The scientific reason?
Here is the best article I have read in awhile which describes exactly why mood changes with the seasons from Scott Free Clinic.
Having said that, one of my pet peeves is people who point out a problem without offering a solution. So here are some ideas to manage your lower mood in the fall.
1. First, forgive yourself, it's not your fault.
2. It may be just temporary for some, just a dip in mood while the days shorten, but a return of decent mood when your body adjusts.
3. Do some things that bring you joy. Spending time with someone you love. Yes, I know when we are depressed sometimes we don't want to see anyone. But pick someone special and try it, you may be surprised.
4. Get outside. Being outdoors is a great boost for most of us. Today I noticed several trees that had colourful berries that I never noticed before. Look closely at your surroundings and find some things that surprise you and remind you of what an awesome God we have.
5. Take care of yourself. You know what you need for comfort. A hot bath, a good movie, your favourite foods, a chat with an old friend? Exercise? Get the sleep you need if you can.
6. This might sound silly, but give yourself permission to be sad, don't fight it, grieve it, feel sorry for yourself and then do something that helps.
7. Change something, even if it is only the furniture. But don't make any major decisions when you're sad. And don't pick a fight when you're sad.
Well friends, those are just some ideas. Some depression getaways. Take care of yourself. And never forget:
There is hope for depression.
I am praying for you.
